Lara Keegan, Fremantle-based psychotherapist and counsellor supporting women through life's seasons.

More About Me and My Path To Becoming A Therapist

I'm an Irish woman, and while I am deeply connected to my roots and to the beauty and spirit of Ireland, I left my home to explore and experience the world. After becoming completely addicted to sunsets I finally settled in Fremantle in Western Australia. Anyone who lives here knows that this little town is full of magic, offering endless opportunities to be outside in nature, with glorious sunsets on tap, and a sense of belonging to a diverse and interesting community.

My career began after studying Sociology and Criminology in 2002, and for almost twenty years I worked in community services and community mental health, with over a decade in youth and complex family settings.

I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of women—listening to stories of heartbreak, resilience, guilt, rage, shame, tenderness, and fierce love.

In 2016 I trained as a Mediator and then a Yoga teacher, followed by Pregnancy Yoga teaching. I also began working with parents whose children and teens had become violent, using the NVR model. It was 2019 when I decided to embark on a Masters in Clinical Integrative Psychotherapy, which gave me the opportunity to develop the skills to work on a much deeper level with the women I support.

I’ve sat with women who were unraveling - exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure how to keep going. These moments have deeply shaped how I work now: with compassion, presence, and a profound respect for the courage it takes to reach out.

My own life story includes big trauma, health issues, a deep grief after the death of my mother, as well as the usual ups and downs that come with being human. What has really helped me to move through these challenges has been my connection to nature, as well as magnificent teachers who have helped me connect to something greater than myself. I also experienced a life-changing therapy relationship with one of the most beautiful and skilled therapists I have ever known.

The Heart of My Work

My approach is gentle and real. I avoid jargon and fancy terminology. I bring my true self into the room, fostering genuine conversations that heal.

Being a Psychotherapist allows me to weave together my respect for Eastern philosophy with the grounded, evidence-based practices of Western psychology. There’s a kind of alchemy that takes place in therapy which I am in awe of. Something sacred happens when two people sit together with open hearts and honest words.
